MORGANTOWN — A 16-year-old shot in the head died as the result of his injuries.
On Thursday, March 10, Monongalia County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Perry Palmer said that Damon Sochko died on Wednesday, March 9. Sochko was a sophomore at Morgantown High School.
Sochko is also known as Damon Sochko-Seals.
Christopher R. Smith, 21, of Morgantown, was charged with wanton endangerment for the shooting.
According to Smith’s criminal complaint: Deputies were dispatched to Church Hill Drive for a reported shooting at about 12:50 a.m. Monday.
When they arrived, they found Sochko shot in the head.
The investigation showed that Smith was recklessly manipulating a loaded handgun when it fired a bullet, hitting Sochko.
The Sochko-Seals family released a statement after Damon’s death.
“The outpouring of love and support received over the last several days has been greatly appreciated. The community has come together to show their support in ways we could have never imagined. For that, we are very thankful. However, as we begin to make arrangements to lay Damon to rest, we ask that our privacy please be respected at this very difficult time. Funeral arrangements are being made through Smith Funeral & Cremation Care of Morgantown. We invite everyone to join us at the public viewing and funeral service once those arrangements have been finalized.”
Mon County Schools Assistant Superintendent Donna Talerico said a gathering is set from 5-7 p.m. today, March 10, at Morgantown High with counselors available for students.
