Can Cats Catch the Coronavirus?

In such a difficult time, there is a lot of fear and concern regarding pets and their susceptibility to coronavirus disease. This fear is not unfounded, as a study has now found that COVID-19 can be contracted by cats.

Before you panic, please remember that although cats are susceptible to the virus, they are not very susceptible as only three domestic cats have been naturally infected (one located in Belgium and the other two located in the United States). The other cats infected are cats who were experimentally infected with SARS-CoV-2. Also, there is no evidence that shows the virus can be passed from cats to people.

Therefore not only are the naturally occurring cases extremely low, but humans are also unable to get the virus from cats. It is important to know that humans can infect cats with the virus; therefore, if anyone is sick, the cat should be kept away from them as well.

What Are the Effects of COVID-19 on Cats?

Based on the evidence we have, although cats are a bit susceptible to the virus, they do not have a severe reaction the way humans do. It only seems to cause respiratory problems that they recover from in a few weeks. The cat from Belgium did develop GI (Gastrointestinal) and some respiratory problems; however, the cat had made a full recovery in nine days. The cats from the United States of America, specifically New York, both suffered from a bout of respiratory illness; however, they are also expected to recover with no lingering effects.

The cats who were experimentally infected with the virus did not develop signs of COVID-19. Rather they simply had evidence of SARS-CoV-2 in their upper airways.

How Do Cats Contract COVID-19?

Cats have been shown to contract the disease if they are in close contact with people who have the disease. The disease can spread from people to cats, but there is no evidence to show that it can spread from cats to people. Cat-to-cat transmission is also possible.

How to Keep Your Cat Safe from COVID-19

Cats tend to want free roam to wander around the neighborhood. Unfortunately, with COVID-19, this has to be curbed as much as possible. We should treat cats the same way we treat humans when protecting them from the virus. This means they should minimize contact with other cats outside the home and avoid public places.

It is important to note that masks are not for pets, and you should not attempt to get your cat to wear a mask. This can be harmful.

How to Keep My Cat Safe if I Get Sick?

If you contract the virus, try as much as possible to minimize contact with your pet. If you can, let them stay with someone else till you recover. If that is not possible, ensure you reduce contact. Don’t let your cat lick your face or breathe in your face. It would be best if you also washed your hands before giving them food and water.

What to Do if My Cat Gets the Virus?

Cats rarely show symptoms of the virus, and they can heal safely at home. However, if you suspect your cat has gotten the virus, you may take them to a veterinary clinic. It is important that you do not attempt to abandon or rehome your cat in this situation because stress could affect its ability to heal.

Things to Know When Moving to a Southern State

blue house on beach

Moving to a new city or geographic region can be difficult — cultural differences and temperature changes just to name a few. However, moving to a southern state is especially difficult because of the culture and climate changes. Here are some things to know when moving to a southern state:

Know how much humidity you can handle before your skin starts feeling dry or itchy. If you have sensitive skin then be aware that the humidity in the south is much higher than the humidity in other parts of the United States.

Bugs & Humidity

Prepare yourself for extremely high temperatures and heat waves during summer months. If you live near a body of water be aware that your feet will probably stick to floors due to the hot weather, and if you are wearing light colored clothing it can get quite dirty from being stuck on sweaty skin or dusty areas.

Be prepared for plentiful amounts of bugs — mostly mosquitoes, ticks, wasps, bees and chiggers (tiny mite like creatures) because they thrive in warmer climates where there’s more moisture present. In order to avoid these pesky insects, wear bug spray!

Bring enough clothes because there’s a chance of your wardrobe being completely ruined due to the humidity making colors bleed or shrink (even when they are “dry clean only”). Also, it’s HOT in the south, so stock up on clothes that can help keep you cool.

Southern Food

To make a broad generalization, Southern cuisine consists of more fried food and sweetened beverages than other areas of the United States. Of course, vegetables are also prevalent as a side, especially in southern soul food or “Meat & 3” options. Expect to eat great food! Just be sure to also watch your calories!

Where to Move?

Also, if possible, use a local moving company that focuses on the city you’re moving to. For instance, MoveOn is a Nashville moving company that can meet you where you are and safely bring your belongings to Nashville. Bellhop Moving does the same for Atlanta.

The southeastern United States has a ton of great places to live. Coastal states such as North Carolina and South Carolina give you the Appalachian mountains and beaches. More inland cities like Atlanta and Nashville give you unique cultural experiences that are one of a kind. So, take your pick! There are so many great places to live, you can’t really go wrong.

Immunizations Recommended for Kids

Immunization is essential for the health of your kid. Over the centuries, the medical community has been able to manufacture vaccines for many deadly diseases. These vaccines are crucial in reducing the mortality rate and the infant mortality rate. In this article, we’ll be outlining the recommended vaccination for kids aged 0 to 6. If the official article from the CDC is a little complicated, here is a simple, easy-to-read version. After reading this, we hope that you will be able to return to the article written by the CDC with a little more understanding. Let’s begin.

Schedule of Immunizations Recommended for Kids by the CDC

  1. At Birth – There is only one vaccine your baby can get at birth, and that is the HepB vaccine. This vaccine is used to prevent Hepatitis B. The first dose of the vaccine can be administered at birth. The second dose can be administered during the 1st and 2nd months while the 3rd dose can be administered between 6-18 months of age.
  1. Rotavirus – The first dose of the vaccine for the rotavirus or RV is received at 2 months of age, while the second dose is received at 4 months of age. Depending on the vaccine selected, there are either 2 or 3 doses. RV1 (Rotarix) has 2 doses while RV5 (RotaTeq) has 3 doses. The 3rd dose for RV5 is taken at 6 months of age.
  1. Diphtheria, tetanus, and acellular pertussis (DTaP) – DTaP has five doses. The first is received at 2 months, the second is received at 4 months, the third is received at 6 months, the fourth is received at 15-18 months, and the 5th is received between the ages of 4 and 6.
  1. Haemophilus influenzae Type B (Hib) – This has four doses. The first dose is received at 2 months, the second dose is received at 4 months, the third dose is received at 6 months, and the fourth dose is received between 12-15 months of age.
  1. Pneumococcal Conjugate (PCV13) – This has 4 doses. The first dose is received at 2 months, the second dose is received at 4 months, the third dose is received at 6 months, and the fourth dose is received between 12-15 months of age.
  1. Inactivated Poliovirus (IPV) – This has four doses. The first dose is received at 2 months, the second dose is received at 4 months, the third dose is received between 6 -18 months of age, and the last dose is received between the ages of 4 and 6.
  1. Influenza (IIV) – This has one or two doses that are to be administered yearly.
  1. MMR/Measles, Mumps, Rubella – This has two doses. The first dose is received at 12-15 months, and the second dose is received at 4-6 years. Children above the age of 12 should not receive the MMR vaccine.
  1. Varicella (VAR) – This has two doses. The first dose is received at 12-15 months, and the second dose is received at 4-6 years.
  1. Hepatitis A (HepA) –  This has two doses received between 12-23 months. There must be a minimum interval of 6 months between the doses.

Should U.S. States Have Lifted Face Mask Mandates So Soon?

Governors from Texas and Mississippi have announced that they would be rescinding the use of a state-wide mandate, which would allow restaurants and businesses to return to their full capacity during March. This statement comes just after the number of infection cases grew higher than they were before in the previous months. Just after the states of Iowa, North Dakota, and Montana also decide to lift the order of using a face mask, these states are responsible for applying several national and international health recommendations.

Then other states like, Alabama, and Utah also decides to cancel the use of a facemask in April, this would make residents of these states left to not using facemasks. However, governors of these states urge residents that although they might have lifted the ban, all residents should ensure that they take precautions. This gives out mixed messages, which could be very confusing because lifting mandates of using face masks contradicts the public health recommendations which were created to prevent the spread of the virus.

What happens to individuals with responsibilities?

Misleading information from the state leaders telling its residents that there won’t be any mandate in wearing a face mask, but people are advised to wear a face mask as a precaution can be very confusing. The mandate of wearing a face mask is bound to fall in the long run, but the result would be less when it comes to reducing the spread of COVID 19 in public places.

Are residents of those states safe from COVID 19?

The simple answer is “no” because the misleading information about the easing of face masks would only make people feel safe around the virus. However, new daily cases of infected people have shown to have increased in the U.S, most especially in Texas. Sadly there are reported cases of different variant of the COVID 19 virus that is starting to spread. So wearing a face mask give you a high chance of reinforcing safety and pro ting yourself from spreading the virus. While there hasn’t been any state that has been vaccinated yet, the state of Texas and Mississippi have a very long way to go, while they rank 44th and 45th respectively.  Several studies show that while the mandate of using a face mask was in place, there was a decline in the infection rate compared to when the mandate was dropped. This only shows that the general public shouldn’t just listen to whatever news you hear out there, you also need to realize how you would be affected.

Public health still tells people that regardless of being vaccinated, it is recommended that you still wear a face mask and also practice social distancing and use a personal hand sanitizer to avoid the spread of the coronavirus to others who may not be vaccinated. Public health ensures to make the process work so that there would be consistency in obeying the safety of other individuals.

Our Opinion on How America Handles Refugees

Over a couple of years, the United States of America has always opened its borders in accepting refugees from other countries, maybe due to individuals who may be fleeing persecution or for those whose country is at war. America has been home to thousands of refugees all over the world. During World war II, America welcomed individuals who were escaping from communist in Europe and Asia, the United States has tried its best to protect refugees who are under the International Humanitarian Law. Right from the year 1980, the United States government moves several ad hoc approaches which is a standardized system that is used for vetting and accepting refugees, and these systems are still used today.

Recently, the number of the United State refugee program has begun to fluctuate. However, the war that broke out in Syria has resulted in a huge spike in the number of the immigration program. Such migration has increased the scrutiny of policymakers in the Middle East during the administration of Barack Obama. However, during the tenure of Donald J. Trump the scrutiny had been banned, therefore refusing to accept some refugees from certain countries.

How many refugees are allowed into the United State of America?

The number of refugees that have been admitted into the country has greatly reduced from 200,000 in 1980 to 22,500 around 2018. The level of refugee admission has always fluctuated, especially during the collapse of the Soviet Union, but in recent times it can’t be compared. There are always annual meetings deliberating on the number of refugees that can be admitted into the country. In 2016, during the administration of President Barrack Obama, he made efforts to increase the ceiling of approved refugees allowed by five thousand, this was done to emphasize the migration crisis that was going on which was caused by the conflict in Syria. He then later proposed that the United States set a ceiling for 110,000 refugees for the year 2017.

Where are these refugees coming from?

Most of the time, the United States of America receives refugees from Asia, Africa, Europe, and also Latin America, however, the number has changed since the resettlement program was created. At the beginning of 1989, there has been an increase in refugee admittance to the U.S from the former Soviet Union Countries. During this time, The largest number of refugees come from countries like Iraq, Myanmar, Bhutan, etc. As of 2018, the countries with the highest number of refugees came from countries like Myanmar, Bhutan, Ukraine, and the DRC.

In 2017, during the administration of President Donald J. Trump, he ordered that there would be a temporary prohibition of some Muslim-majority countries like Iran, Iraq, Sudan, Syria, Yemen, Somalia, etc. Trump has not been a fan of the resettlement deal that was made by Obama and the Australian government agreeing to take 1,250 extra refugees that were held in detention centers, and some of these refugees are from Iran and Somalia, making these countries affected by the third iteration of the travel ban.

How COVID will Impact the Tokyo Olympics

The World Health Organization has officially recognized the COVID 19 outbreak as a global pandemic, which means that organizers would have to make a huge decision whether to go ahead with the major sporting events that would be held during the Tokyo Olympics. So far there have been records of over 500,000 cases of the coronavirus in over 100 countries. And as of March 12th, there was a record of 4,600 death recorded. This was made a huge disaster for a global sporting event that was scheduled to hold around the end of July 2020.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), information has been passed across that the method by which the virus can be prevented is through social distancing and using a hand sanitizer. As of late February, CDC gave a Level 2 travel notice to all passengers who would be traveling to places like Japan, encouraging them to take proper precautions. The Country also went ahead to make sure every preparation needed to host the Olympics was made available. The Countries best approach towards handling containing the virus is by closing down schools, banning certain public transportation. This method has proven to work effectively because it has prevented the spread of diseases from rising significantly.

Canceling and Postponing some events

Due to the outbreak of the virus, some events for the events of the Olympics have either been canceled or postponed. Take, for example, the world Taekwondo has moved its events from the city of Wuxi in China to Amman in Jordan. The European qualification tournament was later moved to Moscow, due to the highly infected son in Milan, Italy. The cancellations of events have affected some tournaments, which affected various rankings of athletes, which would decide which athletes are qualified to move on to the next round.

Also as a result of canceling some events and restricting travels, there would be fewer anti-doping tests for athletes because the Olympics testers would be restricted from traveling. If in the long run, the Olympics games turn out to work out, then there might be several outcomes that could happen. One of the major outcomes would be that athletes would be allowed to compete but without any spectators, the reason is that it would reduce the chances of a crowd transmitting the disease to thousands of others in the audience. This event has happened in some football tournament, a half tournament, it was about to happen during an NBA season until the committee decided to opt-out and suspend the season.

Treat it like a FLU

Another option is to treat the coronavirus like the regular flu and decide to do nothing out of the ordinary. Take, for example, the Super Bowl has never had any reason to cancel any of their matches during the flu season.

It is best to avoid a disaster, that is why postponing the Olympics is the best option, which would give time to prepare, the only side effect it would have is would disrupt a lot of things like a TV broadcast, hotels, sponsors, etc.

Should College Be Free for Students?

The costs of education these days continue to rise. Like, I don’t get it. This keeps raising several questions about the value of college.

The president truly supports the motion which some debts would be canceled. Congress is still yet to act on it.

The debate on the effectiveness and the feasibility of college rages on.

Senator Sanders Bernie has promoted his plan for free colleges back in the year 2016. His vision is European style, where skepticism meets higher education. Here students spoof benefit using equity. All of the costs trusted to fees, books, board, and room go completely?

Since that period, the college which was supposed to be free has turned to a high policy point for democrats. There were several policy points too. There were also several progressive presidential power candidates. Lots of them adopted this in the year 2020. During his presidential campaign, Joe Biden put his plan for a free college forward. This made the community college free for everyone that was engaging in a four-year course. For families that had salaries that wouldn’t reach $125,000 a year.

Several college free plans that relied on states matched up with federal contributions to make up a hundred percent of tuition costs for state students. These covered up the college steep tuition rates. They also require lots of brand new taxes. Sanders proposes got levied on Wall Street. Biden’s proposal didn’t explain how all of these would be paid for or how much it’ll all cost.

Advantages of free college to students

The students would be excited and happy, of course. Is it easy? To score an admission and to go to school for free. That’s how things are supposed to be, though. But because of one thing or the other, it didn’t end up this way for many people who want this to happen.

My thoughts on Colleges Being free for Students

I studied Economics at the University of the state I live in. There’s no need to mention it because you wouldn’t know it. I can imagine how things would have been for my family and me if my education was free. I’m smart if I do say so myself. I deserve to have had my education paid for me by the government because I know in my gut that I’m a world-class asset. Anybody who has me knows they have something that’s brimming with quality. If colleges are free for everyone who doesn’t have the necessary amounts of funds to pay for them, then many people would be trolling into universities, and the rate of illiteracy all across the world would diminish. Who doesn’t want to live in a society filled with people all done with their higher education? Everyone looking sharp, innovative, and feeling incredible. Because their education has been paid for and settled by their lovely government, it would be a good thing, trust me. Oh well, let’s see what’s going to happen in the end. We hope the plan of Biden comes to pass.

The Internet’s Privacy Wars: Pros and Cons

Privacy ways the Internet is going through—severe topic.

Let me explain the Pros and the Cons.

List of Pros

Being protected online

Significant Pro. Because we all use social media to connect as the pandemic carries on, the data we make use of needs to be secured. It could be when we are sending our bank account details to our parents to send us some funds, or we could be sending some orders for foodstuff because life is for the living.

Freedom of speech

If you need to get something reported in your area, this could be anything. We all need our freedom of speech. If your apartment is in a place that the local government isn’t taking proper measures to hide the amount of Covid cases, you might want to tell someone about your recent opinion. You would want to do this and stay safe. This is where you’ll need the Internet to have your back.

List of Cons

After checking the pros, you’ll start thinking of all the horrors that could come from using the Internet the wrong way. The most significant things that should pop in your mind would be;

Cyberbullying

It is relatively easy to make fake IDs. Especially when you have protected privacy, you could live at the back of a mask that’s outright invisible. No one can know or see your real identity. You would be completely free to do anything you want. This would be fine, but the issue is that this cyberbullying could be done by anyone or people that we know. Sweet people could change and just become cruel.

When these people get their invisible dress, they could change your personality. Even sweet people could leave nasty or rude remarks on the Internet. If your child or you is cyberbullied, you need to find out who’s behind the keyboard.

Cybercrime

Online privacy is a beautiful thing, and it guards one against cybercrime. It also helps criminals. If somebody does not take their privacy on the Internet seriously, they could get duped by criminals that know they don’t care for their personal belongings. Online privacy protects people that make use of it. They could hide all of their details from the law and all authorities from the government.

My thoughts on the Internet’s privacy ways

Even though there are Cons to the Internet, people of the world have no choice but to continue making use of the Internet. Where are we going to? What are we going to do without the Internet? Can I teleport? Sadly I cannot, so I need to use the Internet to contact and converse with different people. So even if there’s cybercrime and cyberbullying all around the Internet, please, I can’t do without it. In the presence of a better alternative, aha, now we’re talking. But for now, I’ll still to making use of my Internet, WhatsApp, Google, and Facebook in peace. Nothing you would tell me would change my mind, so do not even stress.

Is Social Media Harmful to Young People?

Whenever anything is going on wrongly in either my siblings or me, my Mom always says we should stop social media 😂🤣😂🤣 I don’t get why, though, but oh well. I’ll be using this piece to explain the question Is Social Media Harmful to Young People?

What are the harms of Social Media?

Though social media has the possibility of negatively affecting teenagers, it could disrupt their sleeping patterns, distract them, expose them to high amounts of cyberbullying, spread rumors, and view the lives of other people, especially those that post a lot of fake lives without contentment on social media. Then there’s also a high amount of peer pressure.

Peer pressure like “See Grace has this new device, I’m going to do whatever I must to get it. And before you know it, someone is in deep trouble.”

These risks are high. Many teenagers suffer from mental health issues that they wouldn’t have suffered from in the absence of social media. This affects teenagers and kids more aged than thirteen years old.

There have been serious studies that have looked at the rate of depression and social media usage on people suffering from symptoms F anxiety. Lots of these teenagers that made use of social media platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, and Twitter were invested in these platforms emotionally. They couldn’t imagine their lives without it. This ended in giving these poor teenagers higher levels of depression and anxiety. Let’s not forget about the worst sleep quality.

What are the Benefits of Social Media on Teenagers?

Though there’s a lot of harm, I have learned to be my person through social media. It has helped me communicate with a lot of other people and for me to build my social network. These great networks help people like teenagers get the necessary support. It also helps them feel included, especially teenagers that are suffering from chronic illnesses or horrible disabilities.

These teenagers also make use of social media platforms to become entertained and to express themselves better. These platforms help teenagers know what’s happening currently, like WhatsApp status. The fastest way to find out anything that’s happening would be to check the WhatsApp status of your contacts. This also helps teenagers break the barriers to their friends geographically. These also include healthy behaviors for teenagers that are doing it right.

Social media platforms have lots of ways it saves and helps people from depression. Especially kids.

Benefits VS Harm of Social Media on Teenagers

I’ll use a scenario to explain this. I suffered from some level of depression recently, but thankfully I’m getting back on my feet. Some people suffer from peer pressure and hopelessness after watching what their mates are doing on social media. On that same social media, they get to meet people that would give them hope and give them the strength to pull through with whatever is happening in their lives. In this case which wins? Is it the harm or the benefit?

It all depends on how your child is internally and how they were trained.

How Family is Who You Love, Not Who You’re Related To

Family is traditionally defined as a group of people closely related to one another either by adoption, blood or marriage. Family can also be your extended family. Traditionally, family is your parents and your siblings, however, and most people will also have some extended family members. This means your grandparents, aunts, uncles, nieces/nephews, and cousins.

Family, however, is not limited to people you’re related to by blood. Family can also be people you feel are kindred spirits and a close-knit group of people bound by love and friendship. Family is always who you love, not who you’re related to.

The idea of family being who you’re related to has caused many people harm because not all families are good families. Some families are abusive, manipulative, and dysfunctional. Such a family can make one feel lonely and deserted, especially since we live in a society full of mostly nuclear families. This makes people think that once their nuclear family isn’t loving, they have no family. This is not true. Family is much more than blood, and you can make your family. You can create your own family with people and friends you love. To create a good, happy and healthy family, you’ll need these qualities.

Qualities of a Happy and Healthy Family

  1. Patience – Patience is necessary for a good family. Members of the family should be patient with each other. Patience is a way to show love. Even when they’re being annoying be patient and wait it out. Patience is the best way to show love.
  1. Kindness – Being kind doesn’t equal being nice all the time or saying yes to all demands. Being kind means being considerate, friendly and generous towards members of your family.
  1. Peace – Peace is necessary for a healthy family. Arguments, noise and rage are things that we do not find enjoyable. Of course there’ll be arguments, but members of a family should never feel unloved or despised after a fight. Even when you argue you should still know that you are loved.
  1. Joy – Choosing joy in all situations. Tough times don’t last, but tough people do.
  1. Love – Show love through devotion, kindness, patience and sacrifice. Love must be shown through action. It’s not enough to say you love someone you have to show you love someone. Love is not disrespectful, and love doesn’t disregard your boundaries. Love doesn’t give an ultimatum, and love does not hurt.

Other qualities include being gentle and having self-control. If you’re in a traditional family where you’re being abused, belittled, manipulated or disregarded, then that is not your family. Those are simply people you are related to by blood. Family must have these qualities. A healthy family should be a safe space from all the trials in the world. If your family produces all your trials, then they are not the best family for you.

Of course, it’s difficult to cut off from your traditional family, and it may hurt, but you must do what it is best for you. Family isn’t always blood. It’s the people in your life who show you love, who show that they want you in their life. People who respect you and love you.
