Why social media is toxic to your health

In today’s world, almost everyone including children owns or has access to smartphones. Many people in the world today live with their smartphones as their virtual companions. These smart devices give people access to electronic social media platforms where they can alerts, information, and updates about their friends, celebrities, family, events, news, and global activities. Social media is therefore an integrated part of people’s daily lives.

Social media are interactive technologies that facilitate the sharing of thoughts, ideas, the creating and sharing of information, and other forms of expression through virtual networks and communities. Social media is at its core a powerful means of communication that has changed how people interact with one another. People can now share and exchange information, ideas, thoughts through virtual networks with speed. In the united states, 72% of people use social media according to the Pew Research Center.

Just like the computer age, social media is a new age. Popular social media platforms include Instagram, Twitter, WhatsApp, Facebook, Tinder, YouTube, etc.

As good as it is, the use of social media also has some downsides to it. Some evidence has implied that the use of social media, its overuse in particular can negatively impact our health in numerous ways. Social media has been associated with depression, anxiety, isolation, low self-esteem, immune issues, flu, and cold. The frequent use of Social media can lead to low quality of sleep and harmful screen time that can wear down the immune system. A Common Sense survey conducted in 2015 found out that teenagers may spend as much as 9 hours online in a day. Social Media has been criticized a lot for reports connecting its use to health consequences. Research has shown that people that spend long hours on the internet experience greater deprivation of sleep, develop worse eating habits and less healthy diets, and do not engage in many exercises. These behaviors pose a threat to their immune system and increase their vulnerability to illnesses and deficiencies. It has been said that those who spend a long time on the internet experience reduced immune function because they are not coming in contact with other people and their germs. The cycle of stress and relief associated with the internet may lead to a reduced level of cortisol. Cortisol is a hormone that impacts the functions of the immune system.

The immune system is very important in the human body. It is responsible for fighting against germs and diseases. A compromised immune system is a compromised health. Why Mental Health Should Not Be Taught in Schools

I am of the opinion that Mental health should not be taught in schools. This is not an ‘anti-psychiatry statement or an attempt to persuade you not to seek psychiatric help. It’s simply a reflection that responsibility for mental health is best placed with the recipient. This responsibility does not extend to relieving patients of their freedom, which will ultimately be theirs only if they are mentally competent.

It seems evident that people without good mental health can’t do as good a job at their jobs as people with healthy minds. But it’s far from obvious why. If doctors had known that depression causes so many physical problems, they would have paid more attention to it before it became fashionable to ignore it. The correlation between mental and physical health is too vague to be predictable. That means it’s not something schools can teach. In medicine, you can’t tell a patient’s symptoms from her diagnosis. The only reliable way of predicting whether a patient will respond well to treatment is to ask her. However, many doctors are so focused on getting the diagnosis right that they don’t ask about the problem. Schools don’t have the luxury of asking. If they did, they might find that people’s mental problems stem not just from a lack of medication but a mismatch between their jobs and their abilities. If schools could work out what people need, then they could teach them that. But they can’t because diagnosing mental problems is difficult.

Most teachers aren’t trained to do therapy. The great majority of teachers are not trained to do therapy. A therapist must be trained in various ways, including introductory psychology, effective communication, listening to and understanding others, and an ability to empathize. Most teachers, however, usually need help to do some of these things.

Teachers are first and foremost observers. They observe students’ behavior and reactions, and then they interpret those reactions. Teachers are not trained to make inferences about people’s inner lives. Thus, when a student seems to have a problem, the teacher often assumes that the student knows and feels what the teacher thinks the student knows and feels. Because of that, teachers often don’t recognize when a student is hurt or upset. Even experienced teachers sometimes seem surprised when a student comes up to them and says, “I feel foolish, and I don’t know why.”

Once a student finally tells a teacher what the teacher thought the student was feeling, the teacher usually feels relieved. With luck, the teacher will then say, “Oh, that’s okay. Let’s go sit somewhere and talk.” But the teacher doesn’t usually say, “Don’t be silly. Don’t you know why you feel stupid? Because you don’t understand.”


Mental health shouldn’t be taught in schools, but it’s commendable that schools explore ways to help students’ mental health.

However, it’s not their place to teach mental health any more than to teach chemistry or music. The most valuable education we can offer our children is to teach them how to reason, how to think critically, how to understand people and situations, how to communicate effectively, how to explore ideas, and how to express themselves.

Mental health are personal matter and should be treated as such. Suppose students are genuinely interested in learning how to improve their emotional well-being and mental strength. In that case, it’s a good thing to explore. But schools shouldn’t be teaching it. Instead, schools should focus on teaching skills that can be readily applied to life, whether you’re on a sales call or dealing with a demanding customer.

That said, schools could offer mental health courses for interested students or offer extracurricular programs that focus on developing emotional well-being. These aren’t just feel-good classes, either. Properly developed, they can help children develop resilience, empathy, and problem-solving skills, which are valuable in business.

But students should be the ones to choose whether they want to participate, and teachers should respect their choices. And, of course, if a student is struggling with mental health issues, involving them in such programs could be counterproductive. However, suppose any school truly wants to help students develop their skills to lead happy, productive lives. In that case, it should be offering mental health classes.

Why I Hate Social Media (Opinion)

Social media has become a staple and life of everybody in this age. Our ancestors never thought of something of this magnitude connecting people across countries and continents. Social media has created a lot of opportunities, and it has a lot of benefits, but like everything, there are disadvantages.

A lot of people often overlook these great disadvantages of social media; a lot of people are not even conscious of it. They have become so accustomed to living with social media that they automatically use it without thinking of its effects,  its benefits, its great disadvantages, and all the damage it does to us. 

In this piece, I am going to share my opinion with you, and I am going to tell you why I hate social media.

The Plague of Social Media and Why I Hate it

Social media can be as hand to a plague; it starts small, seemingly unnoticed, and suddenly it grows and sweeps the globe or a particular area, and you can not think of how life was before the plague, you cannot imagine or relate with the beauty of how life was before the plague, and it’s devastation.

 Due to the advancement of technology, humans finally found a way to connect across vast distances; this was crudely done by letters and telegrams. However, with the Internet and mobile phones, and portable computers, the field of communication and interconnectivity between humans broadened greatly. Social media apps like Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, WhatsApp, and a host of other ones crept up through the vines. People were skeptical about using them at first, but as things progressed, these platforms and apps became inextricably linked to modern life. 

Of course, they came with a lot of advantages which include:

  • Faster communication.
  • Wider reach.
  • Easier dispersion of information.
  • New professions and job opportunities…etcetera. 

They also came with massive unnecessary baggage that has Exacerbated a lot of mental disorders and social problems. 

Most people spend at least 115 minutes every day on social media, this is productive time that could be used to better the lives of people, but it is usually wasted on social media.

 As studies have been conducted on social media over the years, we have come to discover that it could be a nightmare; there are countless negative effects that the use of social media has on people. It has been advised that social media be used on a limited basis, but most people do not heed this advice.

It has been discovered from research that social media can be devastating to your mental health, it has been discovered that young people, especially the ones that grew up after the advent of social media, suffer from a barrage of mental health problems due to social media; these mental problems include:

  • Low self-esteem 
  • Depression 
  • Suicidal thoughts 
  • Loneliness 
  • Social phobia 
  • Decreased life satisfaction 

Now imagine what is supposed to make life better turns out to be the main source of the problems you face in life. The use of social media can make a person think of themselves as less because they see photos of their peers living better lives and looking better. This can lead to depression which can lead to feelings of loneliness, decreased satisfaction with life, stare up a desire of staying away from people and lead to suicidal thoughts. All these end up compounding the lives of people and sucking the essence of their life. Like a plague, the dangers of social media are sweeping; it is like a chain reaction that cascades throughout the life of people.

You have decreased productivity because you spend so much time on social media; because you spend so much time on social media, you get to see people living their best life and showcasing the best parts of their life on social media, so you compare yourself with them and feel that you’re not doing as good as they are so you feel bad about yourself, but you don’t do much about it because you spend so much time on social media. 

You feel lonely, you feel depressed because you know you’re not living up to your potential, you’re not satisfied with your life, and you feel like taking your life. 

Simply eliminating social media from your life can lead to a tremendous increase in satisfaction with your life; you eliminate several triggers of negative thoughts and actions. 


The ills associated with social media are endless.

Is Social Media Harmful to Young People?

Whenever anything is going on wrongly in either my siblings or me, my Mom always says we should stop social media 😂🤣😂🤣 I don’t get why, though, but oh well. I’ll be using this piece to explain the question Is Social Media Harmful to Young People?

What are the harms of Social Media? 

Though social media has the possibility of negatively affecting teenagers, it could disrupt their sleeping patterns, distract them, expose them to high amounts of cyberbullying, spread rumors, and view the lives of other people, especially those that post a lot of fake lives without contentment on social media. Then there’s also a high amount of peer pressure. 

Peer pressure like “See Grace has this new device, I’m going to do whatever I must to get it. And before you know it, someone is in deep trouble.”

These risks are high. Many teenagers suffer from mental health issues that they wouldn’t have suffered from in the absence of social media. This affects teenagers and kids more aged than thirteen years old. 

There have been serious studies that have looked at the rate of depression and social media usage on people suffering from symptoms F anxiety. Lots of these teenagers that made use of social media platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, and Twitter were invested in these platforms emotionally. They couldn’t imagine their lives without it. This ended in giving these poor teenagers higher levels of depression and anxiety. Let’s not forget about the worst sleep quality. 

What are the Benefits of Social Media on Teenagers?

Though there’s a lot of harm, I have learned to be my person through social media. It has helped me communicate with a lot of other people and for me to build my social network. These great networks help people like teenagers get the necessary support. It also helps them feel included, especially teenagers that are suffering from chronic illnesses or horrible disabilities. 

These teenagers also make use of social media platforms to become entertained and to express themselves better. These platforms help teenagers know what’s happening currently, like WhatsApp status. The fastest way to find out anything that’s happening would be to check the WhatsApp status of your contacts. This also helps teenagers break the barriers to their friends geographically. These also include healthy behaviors for teenagers that are doing it right.

Social media platforms have lots of ways it saves and helps people from depression. Especially kids.

Benefits VS Harm of Social Media on Teenagers 

I’ll use a scenario to explain this. I suffered from some level of depression recently, but thankfully I’m getting back on my feet. Some people suffer from peer pressure and hopelessness after watching what their mates are doing on social media. On that same social media, they get to meet people that would give them hope and give them the strength to pull through with whatever is happening in their lives. In this case which wins? Is it the harm or the benefit?

It all depends on how your child is internally and how they were trained.
